I grew up in West Long Branch, NJ, in the 50’s and 60’s. In my high school there was only one black student, and my grandmother had a caretaker who was African American. That was the extent of my personal encounter with people of color. Over the years, I became aware of prejudice and racism, but rarely saw any displays of such in my circle of experience. I was both frightened and confused when race riots broke out across our nation. In fact, right in my own back yard, Asbury Park was devastated at that time, never to recover until recently. I still recall how almost immediately people started selling T-shirts with the words: “Asbury Park. It’s a riot.” While it was intended to be funny, even then, I found it to be in bad taste. After that tumultuous time, our nation made great progress. Sadly, racism and prejudice will always be around, but I thought that it had largely become something of the past. All of that history culminated in the election of our first black president. Then, suddenly, I see our nation moving back to that awful time of hatred and division. What happened? Some have claimed that the issue of race has never been resolved, and others believe that politics is to blame. It is disturbing to watch, and I feel, as many do, helpless to stop the erosion of our society. I feel as if we are a bunch of people on a sinking ship, except that no one is worried about the rising water. The main concern is fighting with the “others,” whoever they are. Instead of having constructive and honest debates, we are more concerned with who made a statement. Are they black, white, Mexican, Republican, Democrat, gay, man or woman, senior citizen or addict? We never discuss actual ideas, and we never reach any conclusions. Sadly, truth and right and wrong have become completely personal. Either no one can be offended, or it is only all right and even good to offend the people with whom one disagrees. Racism is a serious, objective moral wrong. However, I don’t think we should mindlessly start fighting battles that have already been won. Isn’t it like a husband and wife bringing up an old argument that long since should have been forgiven and forgotten? I am reminded of the parable of the weeds and the wheat. “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well…Where have the weeds come from? He answered, an enemy has done this” (see Matthew 13: 24 ff). Let us not become the enemy sowing weeds. Let us be the ones who sow good seeds that will stop the rising water and keep the ship from sinking.

KNOW YOUR SAINTS
St. Almedha (6th century) August 1
According to Welsh legend she was the daughter of King Brychan and early dedicated herself to God. She fled to Llanddew to escape marriage to a young prince, then to Llanfillo and later to Llechfaen, in all of which places she was ignored and refused help. She finally settled in a cell near Brecon provided by the lord there. Supposedly her suitor caught up with her there and when she resisted him he cut off her head with a sword. Reputedly a spring of water appeared where her head had fallen. She had prophesied dire things for the villages that had rejected her and these predictions are said to have materialized after her death. She is also known as Aled and Eiluned, and some scholars believe her story is the same as that told of St. Winifred.
ASK A QUESTION
What exactly is a coadjutor bishop?
As you have heard, our Diocese now has a coadjutor bishop, Bishop David O’Connell, who was ordained by Bishop Smith on Friday, July 30 in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Trenton. A coadjutor bishop is appointed by the Holy See as an assistant to a bishop in governing a diocese. He functions as an auxiliary bishop. He has all the sacramental authority of a bishop, but is not the chief administrator of the diocese. That role falls to the Ordinary, the Bishop of the Diocese, in our case Bishop Smith. As coadjutor, Bishop O’Connell will assume that position when Bishop Smith retires. Bishop Smith by canon law had to hand in his resignation on the occasion of his 75th birthday, which was in June. He will continue to serve as Ordinary until the Holy Father officially accepts his resignation. When that happens, which will probably take place within six to twelve months, Bishop O’Connell will automatically become Bishop of Trenton.
Maria Esperanza
We have a group that meets every Thursday morning 10:00am in St. Mary of the Pines to say the Rosary for the Canonization of Maria Esperanza and for a very special intention. All are welcome.
Betania III, the community formed by Maria Esperanza, meets on the LAST Sunday of each month with the praying of the Divine Chaplet, Rosary, and Mass at 3:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines. The next Mass will be August 29. All are welcome. For more information, please call Carol Liming at 703-2137.
DAY OF PRAYER
We have instituted monthly Days of Prayer to take place on the second Monday of every month. Both Churches will be open from after the morning Masses until 8:00pm. We are encouraging parishioners of all ages to make a point of stopping in the Church to say a prayer. To conclude the day of prayer, Evening Prayer will be said at 7:30pm in St. Mary’s Church. The next day of prayer will be August 9. Please make it a point to stop in on that day and invite others to do the same.

Liturgical Footnote #15: The Creed
By Fr. John C. Garrett
The Mass is the celebration of the New Covenant that God offers to humankind. Unlike a contract, which is just an exchange of goods and services, a covenant involves a giving of one’s life to the other. So far in our discussion of the Liturgy of the Word we have been hearing God’s proposal to us. In the readings from both the Old and New Testament, God has been beckoning to us, His beloved. He has expressed His desire to share His very life with us so that we can have life to the full. It is now time for our response.
The Creed (also called the Profession of Faith, or Symbolum) the response of the gathered people “to the word of God proclaimed in the readings from the Sacred Scripture and explained in the homily....” (GIRM #67). The Creed is a statement of what we believe as Catholics.
What does it mean for us to say that we “believe” something? In today’s language, it can mean something very different than what Christ is asking us for. We might say that “I believe the Giants are going to win the Super Bowl this year.” This is merely a statement of our desire, our wish for something. Our ultimate desire is for God, but in the Creed our statement of belief is much more certain. In the Creed we expressing what we place all our trust, in fact our very lives, in.
The Creed that we say at Mass comes from the fourth century. It was a time in which there was a great deal of doubt about the very nature of Jesus, Mary and the Church. Even many bishops fell into error, saying that Jesus was not God, but merely a creature. In the midst of all this controversy and doubt, the leaders of the Church gathered together in several Councils and formulated a clear statement of what Catholics believe. They began with using the Apostles’ Creed; traditionally twelve statements by the twelve Apostles that summarized the true teaching of Jesus. The Creed that we recite at each Sunday Mass is called the Nicene-Constantinoplitan Creed, after the two Church Councils at which it was written. The heresies which prompted the writing of the Creed was more prevalent in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, the Creed became part the the Mass there shortly after it was promulgated. It did not become part of the Mass in the Western part of the Church until about the year 1000 A.D.
Believe it or not, there is a preference for the Creed to be sung at Mass on Sunday. This is fairly common in many countries, but not so here in the United States. The zenith of the Creed is when we state our belief in the Incarnation -- that for our salvation God became one of us and was made man. It is for this reason, that when we say the words, “by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man...,” everyone is suppose to make a solemn bow (not just of the head, but from the waist). The only exception to this is for the Solemnities of the Annunciation (March 25) and Christmas when everyone is suppose to genuflect.
I don’t have the space to go through each statement of the Creed, but we should not become too careless and automatic in reciting it. We should make it a profound prayer and reflect on what we are saying we are putting all our trust and life in. It is our “yes” to God. |

KNOW YOUR PARISH – BY CATHY BOSS
I hinted last week of a Jamaican influence in Father John’s Installation as Pastor of Holy Innocents in Neptune. The second Communion hymn, Take My Life, sung beautifully by the choir at Holy Innocents sounded very familiar. It was not a traditional Communion hymn, but a song written by Father Richard Ho Lung. If you are not familiar with Father Ho Lung, he started the international monastic order of Brothers, Missionaries of the Poor (MOP), dedicated to the ‘joyful service with Christ on the Cross’ to serve the poorest of the poor. One of the most striking characteristics of the life and works of the Missionaries of the Poor is the music - award-winning music for all areas of Christian living with a unique Caribbean style with most of the songs written by Father and performed by a group of talented musicians who performed at St. Mary’s while Father John was our Parochial Vicar – hence my familiarity with the song. Ironically, the Missionaries of the Poor are currently working on establishing Holy Innocents Centers. Father Ho Lung, in his recent work to prevent legalization of abortion in Jamaica and recognizing that it is insufficient to just speak out against abortion, announced that MOP would build a homes to care for pregnant mothers and their babies – Holy Innocents Centers, to give women an option to abortion. Father John spent time, along with some of our parishioners, working with MOP in Jamaica while he was our Parochial Vicar. The song Take My Life with its Jamaican beat and lyrics ‘take my life’ – ‘take my talents’ – ‘take my mind’ – ‘take me all that I am’ is a perfect testament to Father John and his service to Christ. After Communion, Father John thanked the Bishop for the opportunity to embark on his new mission – that of proclaiming Christ, bringing hope of life in Christ to the Holy Innocents community. He thanked his family and extended family –St. Mary’s and the other parishes he has served on his ‘journey’ to Holy Innocents - for their prayers and support and thanked the teachers of Holy Innocents School, noting what a joy it is to see the work that goes on at the School. Father John came down to our Nights of Summer carnival and was congratulated by so many parishioners – all so proud of our former Parochial Vicar. God Bless you, Father John, and your Holy Innocents Parish Community. You will always remain a part of St. Mary’s Parish Community.
