TITHING REPORT
Last Sunday, St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $27,108.00 in the regular collection. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING! “Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.” By our participation in Mass and the Sacraments, we welcome God as a partner in our lives. Being generous with our time, our talents, and our income is a praiseworthy expression of that partnership.
TODAY THERE IS A SECOND ENVELOPE TOWARD OUR DIOCESAN ASSESSMENT.
BIBLE TRIVIA
LAST WEEK: Besides healings, Jesus also was teaching in Capernaum…“on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught” (Mark 1: 21) from last week’s Gospel.
TODAY’S QUESTION: In today’s second reading, St. Paul uses the word “gospel” four times. How many times does it appear in the New Testament? For extra credit, the word appears in only one of the four Gospels – which one?

*St. Mary of the Pines in Manahawkin: 9:00am and 5:00pm

ASK A QUESTION
In the letter read from Bishop O’Connell, contraception was mentioned. What is the Church’s teaching? Has it changed?
Church teaching against contraception has not changed. Quoting from Humanae Vitae “On the Regulation of Birth,” the Catechism states: “Periodic continence, that is, the methods of birth regulation based on self-observation and the use of infertile periods, is in conformity with the objective criteria of morality. These methods respect the bodies of the spouses, encourage tenderness between them, and favor the education of an authentic freedom. In contrast, ‘every action which, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible’ is intrinsically evil” (CCC, #2370).
KNOW YOUR SAINTS
St. Avitus (d. c. 525) February 5
The son of Isychius, bishop of Vienne, he was born at Auvergne and named Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus. He succeeded his father (the rule of celibacy was not universal until 1139) as bishop of Vienne in 490, became known for his wisdom, learning, and charity, and ransomed many Ligurian captives of the Burgundians. He converted King Sigismund of Burgundy to Christianity in 516, caused Sigismund to rebuild Aganaum monastery in retribution for his murder of his son, Sigeric (a murder he committed on the accusations of Sigeric’s stepmother, which were later proved to be false), and presided over the Council of Epaon in 517. He wrote an allegorical epic on the creation of man, De spiritualis histoiae gestae, a poem on chastity, De laude virginitatis, and homilies and letters, some of which are still extant.
Sisters of Life
The Sisters of Life is a contemplative / active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O'Connor for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life. Reverence and gratitude for the unique and unrepeatable gift of each human life made in the image and likeness of God fuels the prayer of each Sister, their first mission in building the Kingdom of God and the "Culture of Life". The Sisters of Life will be speaking at all Masses February 11th and 12th.

Letter From The Pastor
It’s not over, but we are very, very close. I sometimes feel as a member of the Church to be like Jor-El, the father of Superman. He saw the fate of Krypton and tried to warn his fellow citizens to no avail. They laughed at him – just before the planet was destroyed.
As our society fails on one moral issue after another, I feel the crumbling of the earth beneath. I witness a government and court system that has become increasingly powerful and influential over virtually every aspect of life. I notice people, even Catholics, quite willing to yield authority to that government and even to popular figures rather than accept the wisdom of the Church. Bishop O’Connell alluded to this struggle in his powerful letter read at Mass last weekend. Unfortunately, this is only one of many issues with which we are confronted. Many in our state legislature are determined to redefine marriage, claiming that it is a civil right and, as always, dismissing opposing views as mere bigotry. Proponents of traditional marriage ARE NOT motivated by prejudice. The current spiritual and moral crisis didn’t happen overnight. It has been and is supported by any number of assumptions that are incorrect but very subtly have been promoted over the years so that most people simply accept them without question. Once they are accepted, certain conclusions follow. Anyone who dares to challenge these foundational assumptions is always dismissed as nothing more than a fanatic and, usually for negative emphasis the label “religious” is added. In this cultural battle, the biggest obstacle we face is that too many people, particularly Catholics, DO NOTHING. Those of opposing sentiments often have the forum of public media giving the impression that they are the majority view. If all Catholics stood together, the impact would be overwhelming. Another reason why too many are reluctant to act is because of “politics.” There is a fear that to speak out is “political.” Well, silence is political. Further, these are not Republican or Democratic issues. They are human and moral issues. Too often, people are concerned whether supporting this or that issue is good or bad for their particular candidate or party. Truth should not be muzzled by blind affiliations. In reference to the specific issues mentioned, in order to be informed and take positive action, check out these two websites: www.usccb.org/conscience and www.njcathconf.org, please, please look at them and TAKE ACTION. I want to applaud Bishop O’Connell for his clarity of thinking and courage in speaking out boldly. Let us stand with him, let us stand with our Church, let us stand with the truth. For too long, so many have taken a back seat and allowed other influences to move to the forefront. It’s time we applied the brakes to stop the slide down the hill and begin the climb back to the top. “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3: 15, 16). |

Adoration is a spiritual dimension that opens up channels of grace in a very special way. To take time out of our busy schedules and make time to be with our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, in the special grace of Perpetual Adoration, is a tangible testimony that we truly believe that our Blessed Lord is truly present. (Lighthouse 7.org copyright 2007)
The need for new Adorers is urgent. If Adoration at St. Mary’s is to continue being perpetual, we must have some new people! Please consider becoming an Adorer for one of the open hours on the long list below or adding your name to the substitute list.

KNOW YOUR PARISH
At the conclusion of World Youth Day (WYD) 2011 in Madrid, Spain, Four of our young adults, Maria, James and Michael Sicilia and Kristen Boss heard Pope Benedict XVI officially announced that the next World Youth Day will be held July 23 – 28, 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “You, young people, are not just the future of the Church and of humanity, as if we could somehow run away from the present. On the contrary: you are that young man now; you are that young man in the Church and in humanity today. You are his young face. The Church needs you, as young people, to manifest to the world the face of Jesus Christ, visible in the Christian community.” Pope Benedict XVI, meeting with youth in May, 2007, Brazil. For World Youth Day 2011, nearly two million pilgrims came, representing 193 countries and 21 languages, not to mention the 28,400 volunteers who worked on WYD. Eight million meals were consumed, and 2,462 places of accommodation were provided. There were also 14,000 priests and 841 bishops in attendance. In Retiro Park, where tents were erected for confessions, 40,000 people participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is never too early to start planning for World Youth Day 2013 – less than 2 years away! WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a festive encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions. St. Mary’s WYD pilgrims have already begun to plan with the first of 2 indoor flea market fundraisers scheduled for April 21 from 9 am – 2 pm. Interested in the WYD 2013? There will be an informational meeting about WYD 2013, February 9th at 7pm in the Rectory in Barnegat. Stop by for more information. God Bless.

We have had three Spanish Masses thus far and the Spanish speaking community has become very involved. However, more Spanish people live within our parish boundaries who do not come to Mass. Many attend other denominations. Our hope is that they feel so welcomed by our parish family that they will become part of it. Please share this good news. The Spanish Mass is celebrated on the third Sunday of every month at 2:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines. Fr. Armando Rodriguez is our celebrant. We are in contact with St. Francis Parish, which has a bi-weekly Mass in Spanish. Please keep our work of evangelization in prayer and let us always welcome everyone who comes to Mass. The Spanish Missalettes have arrived and are available in the clear crates in the back of St. Mary of the Pines Church to be used during Mass. Please do not take them home. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry or with the Mass, please contact the parish office or our Spanish Outreach Coordinator, Charles Giles, at 698-7159 or 271-4936.

MONTHLY DAY OF PRAYER
We have instituted a monthly Day of Prayer to take place on the second Monday of every month. Both Churches will be open from after the morning Masses until 8:00pm. We encourage parishioners of all ages to stop in the Church to say a prayer for our nation, for pro-life, and for peace. To conclude the day, prayers for life will be said at 7:00 pm followed by the Rosary and ending with Evening Prayer at 7:30pm in St. Mary’s Church. The next Day of Prayer will be February 13. Please make it a point to stop in on that day and invite others to do the same.
St. Bernard’s Food for Pets
St. Bernard's Food for Pets has been in existence for over seven months. During this short time period, we have serviced over 300 families, providing food for hundreds of cats and dogs. We could not have accomplished this without the support of the parishioners of St. Mary's and many other businesses in our area. We would like to particularly thank Manahawkin Chrysler Jeep, Walmart ( in particular the manager of the Pet Department, Jini), WBNJ 91.9 for continuing the public service announcement on our behalf, Lacey Pet Shop, the Popcorn Zoo (for sharing their "extra" food with us), Lacey Servicenter, local newspapers for printing articles about us, Greenbriar Oceanaire, Heritage Point, and Perry Lake adult communities for continuing to donate food on a regular basis, Kim Pepenella for selecting us as her Girl Scout Gold Award Project and arranging food drives at Barnegat High School and Southern Ocean Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond all, the parishioners of St Mary's are extraordinary in their generosity. Thank you on behalf of all of us at St Bernard's.

YOUTH GROUP
More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:
“Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” Once again our youth group will be taking part in this most worthy cause after all the masses this weekend. Through this mission, young people learn what it’s like to make a positive difference in the world. You also can be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday.
For more information about our many youth group activities, please call Mrs. Craft at 597-1071 or visit our website at www.stmarysyouthonline.com.

There will be a meeting for parishioners interested in attending the next World Youth Day pilgrimage. World Youth Day (WYD) is a gathering of youth from nearly every nation in world to celebrate and renew their Catholic faith. Pilgrims experience catechesis session to learn more about the faith; concerts and rallies to celebrate; times for Mass, prayer, Confession, and adoration: a vocation fair featuring dozens of religious orders; and ultimately a pilgrimage walk and overnight vigil ending with Mass celebrated by the Pope. WYD is meant for young adults, so pilgrims must be 18 – 40 years of age. The next World Youth Day will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July 2013. If you would like to learn more about it, our interest meeting will be Thursday, February 9th at 7:00 pm in the rectory. We hope to see you!
