KNOW YOUR PARISH

There is a feature at St. Mary’s ‘Nights of Summer’ carnival that carnival goers rave about – our food, run by the infamous team of Joe and Lou.  Their food is second to none at affordable prices.  The carnival offers a wide variety of items, all of which need to be prepared, cooked, and sold to hungry carnival goers and hungry carnival workers.  This expansive endeavor takes many, many volunteers.  Volunteers are needed to prepare and cook the food, both inside the kitchen and outside in the food tent.  They are needed to sell coffee & cake, clams and food, both inside the Parish Center and in the outside food tent.  For health reasons, food tickets are sold to carnival goers, rather than have the food handlers also handle money.  Volunteers are needed to sell these food tickets, again both inside the Parish Center and by the outside food tent.  If you would like to be part of Joe and Lou’s food adventure, volunteer for any of these food-related activities. Want to know what’s on the food menu or what the nightly food special is?  There is a great new way for you to find out – on our website: www.stmaryscarnival.org with Keydi Boss as web editor.  The website has an awesome look and all sorts of useful information – from the food menu and daily food specials, to ticket prices, to hours, to directions, to entertainment, to raffles, to rides and attractions, to sponsor information, to youth activities, to community information.   You can also complete the volunteer form online and email it back to us.  Arranging for the carnival’s nightly indoor entertainment each year is not an easy task and takes a very talented, creative, diplomatic and patient person to do so.  St. Mary’s Nights of Summer Carnival Core Committee is very pleased to have our own Father Ken as its Entertainment chair.  Hasn’t he done a phenomenal job over the years!!!  I am sure this year’s entertainment will be just as spectacular.  We will kick off the carnival entertainment on Tuesday night with performers from the Valmonte Center of Performing Arts.  Wednesday will feature the sounds of the Jersey Shore DJ’s as well as a State Police K-9 demonstration.  Thursday turns country with the Cross Country Dancers.  Friday features John Pizzi, ventriloquist and comedian.  Contemporary Christian music with ‘The Castoffs’ will be the venue for Saturday night.  On Sunday we will hear the sounds of the 50’s with the band, ‘Mid-Life Crisis’.  Each night Father Ken has also arranged for martial arts demonstrations from local schools.  I hope you will all stop by to experience what great family fun the Nights of Summer carnival is.  Stop by for dinner at Joe and Lou’s and enjoy some of the entertainment Father Ken has arranged.    Pray for great weather and a successful carnival.    God Bless.

KNOW YOUR SAINTS

Blessed Benedict XI (1240-1304) July 7

Born in Treviso, Italy, Nicholas Boccasini was educated there and at Venice, where he joined the Dominicans when he was fourteen. He became a professor and taught at Venice and Bologna, served as Dominican prior general of Lombardy, and in 1296 was elected master general of the Order.  He was made a cardinal in 1298 and bishop of Ostia and served as papal legate to Hungary to try to settle the civil war there. He was one of only two cardinals to defend Pope Boniface VIII against false charges by Philip the Fair.  Benedict rallied papal forces and rescued the Pope from prison.  He was elected Pope on October 22, 1303, made an uneasy peace with Philip, worked to reconcile warring factions in Europe and the Church and to increase spirituality, but died suddenly in Perugia on July 7 only eight months after his election.  Some scholars believe he may have been poisoned.  He was beatified in 1736.

MINISTRY COMMUNICATION TEAMS

On Tuesday evening, June 24th, parish council members and representatives of the seven Ministry Communication Teams met at St. Mary of the Pines, along with Father Ken, to learn about positive changes that Father hopes to put in place, so that the parish community might be better served.  The essence of the vision for the ministries is better communication among ministries, Father Ken, and the parish.  People at the meeting noted that there are so many incredible ministries that tend to the needs of so many, yet most in the parish community do not even realize they exist.  This preliminary meeting was a stepping-stone towards making St. Mary’s Barnegat and St Mary of the Pines a more effective parish community through active communication The seven major Ministry Communication Teams, encapsulating many other ministries within each group, is as follows:  Evangelization, Liturgical, Service and Justice, Social, Spiritual, Support, and Youth.
