TITHING REPORT

Last Sunday, St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $25,722.00 in the regular collection and an additional $2,077.00 in the second envelope for the Church in Latin America. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING!  “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”   Stewardship involves a personal awareness of our Time, Talent and Treasure and a desire to share these.

NEXT WEEKEND THERE IS A SECOND ENVELOPE TOWARD OUR DIOCESAN ASSESSMENT.

BIBLE TRIVIA

LAST WEEK:  The word repent occurs 36 times in the Bible, with the two winners being Jeremiah in the Old Testament (seven times) and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament (ten times).

TODAY’S QUESTION:  Besides healings, what is the other main action that Jesus performed in Capernaum?

ASK A QUESTION

How does an angel become an angel, and is it true that each of us has a guardian angel?

An angel does not “become” an angel.  God created these spiritual beings as angels.  And, yes, it is true that each of us has a guardian angel. Be sure to pray to yours for safety, protection, and to help you grow in holiness.

KNOW YOUR SAINTS

St. Gildas the Wise (c. 500-c. 570) January 29

Born in the lower Clyde River area of Scotland, he became an ascetic at Llanilltud, Wales, with St. Finnian as a disciple for a time and then visited Ireland.  Gildas lived for a time on Flatholm Island in Bristow Channel and spent the last years of his life in Brittany, living for a while as a hermit on an island near Rhuys in Morbihan Bay.  He was the author of De excidio Britanniae, decrying the moral evils rampant in Britain.

“BEHOLD THE LAMB”

It has been our custom at some Masses to sing a refrain before the prayer of the celebrant as he elevates the Host.  With the change in the translations at Mass, we have returned to the use of the words:  “Behold, the Lamb of God.”  Singing the phrase is a duplication since we will fully honor Jesus as the Lamb of God when the priest elevates the Host. Therefore beginning in February we will stop singing this antiphon at Mass.

KNOW YOUR PARISH

This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Roe vs Wade decision – the historic Supreme Court decision that overturned a Texas interpretation of abortion law and made abortion legal in the United States.  The Diocese of Trenton marked the anniversary with a Mass for Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life, celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Trenton. This Mass served as a prelude to the Rally on the State House. I hope some of you were able  to join Catholics from New Jersey and all people everywhere in praying for an end to abortion. The walk from the Cathedral to the State House for the NJRTL Rally for Life will follow the Mass.

On the national level, thousands of people from around the country converged on Washington, DC for the March for Life on the National Mall.  The Rally began at noon on the Mall with the March for Life immediately following.  For those who are not familiar with the March for Life, let me give you a little background on the March.  In October 1973, grassroots prolife leaders became concerned that the day would come and go  without properly memorializing the Supreme Court's infamous abortion decisions and without petitioning Congress for redress. About thirty prolife veterans resolved themselves into a committee and began making plans for the first March for Life. On January 22, 1974, the first March for Life was held on the West Steps of the Capitol. An estimated 20,000 committed prolife Americans rallied that day on behalf of our preborn brothers and sisters. In 1974, the March for Life was incorporated as a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization. The numbers of those marching have gradually risen through the years to well over 200,000.  There were free bus trips to join the March sponsored throughout our Diocese including one by our own Knights of Columbus.    As I sit rocking my granddaughter to sleep, I often wonder how many fetuses never make it to life because of that decision.  God Bless.

HOLY FATHER’S INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY

To help us become more aware of our connectedness to the Universal Church, we are printing in the bulletin the monthly prayer intentions of the Holy Father for the good of our Church and the whole world.

General Intention: Victims of Natural Disasters. That the victims of natural disasters may receive the spiritual and material comfort they need to rebuild their lives.

Missionary Intention: Dedication to Peace. That the dedication of Christians to Peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all men and women of good will.

Letter From The Pastor

This past Monday, members of our parish, our youth ministry, and the Knights of Columbus joined countless others for the annual March for Life in Washington.  This event in support of life on the anniversary (January 22) of the tragic decision of Roe vs. Wade is not merely a once a year happening, but an ongoing challenge for us as Catholics to stand up for life.

Here is an inspiring letter from our Bishop for that occasion entitled, “I Have Come That You May Have Life.”  Illness always seems different when it’s our own we are facing.  As difficult as it may be to handle sickness in others, especially those we love most, an adverse medical diagnosis presented to us can be, no, is particularly sobering.  That was the way I felt when doctors told me I had cancer.  What started out as a small skin cancer, became more aggressive, apparently due to my neglect.  “It’ll go away,” I thought.  When I tried to dismiss the diagnosis as “my Irish skin,” doctors were not so amused.  “Bishop, cancer is cancer,” was their sober reply.  Having wrestled with diabetes and an eventual amputation during the past year, I just wasn’t ready for “another health issue,” certainly not the “c” word.  Not my call, as they say.  The right side of my nose was removed and reconstructed at Fox Chase Cancer Center.  “We got it all,” were the only words I wanted to hear.  And, thank God, that’s what they said.  Sooner or later, as adults, all of us must confront the ultimate fact of life that none of us is immortal, this side of heaven.  The diminishing of our health as we age is a gradual and not so subtle reminder that no one can escape this world alive.  Of that we can be sure!  In the meantime, however, we should live every day of our lives with joyful enthusiasm, remembering Jesus’ words in John’s Gospel:  “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10)!  Life is a gift, from conception to natural death and we should treat it that way – our human life, all human life – however many years God gives us.  That is why we, as Catholics, take the so-called “life issues” so seriously. After all, if life is not our first, immediate and ultimate concern, what else really matters “this side of heaven?”  What good does it do to talk about anything if we don’t begin with life?  But “life” isn’t just a “Catholic issue” or concern or simply the subject of some Church teaching.  No. Life is a human issue and should be a concern for all of us, Catholic or not.  Confronting occasions when life is threatened or challenged--as in the case of illness or disease beyond our control--creates an opportunity for serious reflection.  It creates a “perspective” from which we can and should consider the meaning and purpose of life as well as its source and goal.  Why am I here?  What did God intend for me?  Where am I going?  Making choices about life and its continuation--whether my own life or that of others--is another matter, a matter that has consequences beyond the particular choice or person making it.  God created me and my life belongs to God.  God created my neighbor and his/her life belongs to God.  God created the child in the womb.  God created the elderly and the sick and the disabled.  God created the innocent and the guilty.  These human lives, from

conception to natural death, are not simply a matter of some “choice.”  Their continuation or termination is not simply a matter of convenience or economy or an aspect of some perceived right.  These are human beings, human lives, each individually created by God for a purpose!  The Prophet Jeremiah captured it best when he proclaimed God’s words to him, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart” (Jeremiah 1:5). Catholics must be pro-life.  There is simply no other “choice” or alternative, no valid counter-argument. Our pro-life position must embrace the womb and the tomb and every moment in between, without forgetting or ignoring support for the whole of life until its natural end as determined by our Creator.  A pro-life Catholic also supports marriage as the Church teaches and family, the best context for life’s creation and support.  A pro-life Catholic also has concern for the poor and those in need, never abandoning those who [rightly] choose to give birth, despite difficult personal circumstances.  A pro-life Catholic also draws strength for living life in the faith, hope and love that are God’s gifts and graces.  It’s all about life. Life is all about love.  Love is all about God.  And God is all that really matters.

+ The Most Reverend David M. O’Connell,

 CM, Bishop of Trenton.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL

The BAA supports many ministries in our Diocese.  One ministry will be highlighted each week in the bulletin.

Ministry of Catholic Schools

Catholic schools in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties welcome Catholic and non-Catholic students from many different cultural backgrounds.  Parents, as the primary educators of their children, work in partnership with teachers to develop their children’s potential in becoming life-long learners.  In a faith-centered, child-sensitive environment, students are taught respect and to value individual differences in others.  Our school’s Catholic identity integrates spirituality, collegiality, social justice and academic development as students proclaim the faith in all learning actiivites.

ADORATION CHAPEL

Many Adorers are elderly and the winter months are difficult for them. That, combined with the number of “snowbirds”, has made the need for new Adorers urgent.  If Adoration at St. Mary’s is to continue being perpetual, we must have some new people!  Please consider becoming an Adorer for one of the open hours on the long list below or adding your name to the substitute list.

BULLETINS

Hopefully, you TAKE HOME a bulletin each week to become aware of our various parish activities and to read the columns on education and formation.  We have asked the ushers not to hand out the bulletins before Mass in order to encourage parishioners to focus on praying and spiritual preparation.  It is our goal, as is the practice in many parishes, to have the ushers hand the bulletins to people as they leave Mass.  Often, many bulletins are left in the pews, which then need to be gathered before the next Mass.  For those who still wish to read the bulletin before Mass, they are available at the usual locations.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is 178 years old and has been in existence at St. Mary’s Parish for over 15 years.  The aim of SVdP is to bring social justice and friendship to those in need.  Our men and women join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person advice to those who are needy and suffering.  This is in the tradition of its founder Blessed Freceric Ozanam and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul.  There are over 100 members in St. Mary’s conference.  And, over 90 are active whether by volunteering in the food pantry, the office, or as home visitors.  In the fiscal year ending September 30th, there were 240 home visits which resulted in assisting 370 clients.  Over $99,000.00 was distributed to these clients to assist with utilities, rents, car repairs, etc.  In addition, over 600 referrals to other agencies were made.  Further, nearly 7,000 persons visited our food pantry.  The total value of food distributed was over $144,000.00  We are blessed with a very caring parish who take very seriously the call to help others.  Thanks to our Parishioners and such ministries as the Peaceful Dove Gift Shop and St. Mary’s Golf League as well as the many communities, schools, and scouts, we are able to help as many people as possible.  No work of charity is foreign to the Society.

SPANISH OUTREACH

Our Spanish outreach ministry has begun with a great involvement. A Spanish choir has been formed consisting of 8 singers’, guitar players and two violin players. We have had 3 Spanish masses thus far and the Spanish speaking community has become very involved. Many more Spanish people live within our parish boundaries but few come to Mass. Many attend other denominations.  Our hope is that we make them feel welcomed into our parish family. Please tell them about our ministry. The Spanish Mass is being held the third Sunday of every month at 2PM at St. Mary’s of the Pines. Fr. Armando Rodriguez will be our celebrant. We are also in contact with St. Francis Parish, which has a bi-weekly Mass in Spanish. We will be looking at more ways to evangelize in the very near future. Please keep this effort of evangelization in prayer and let us always welcome all who come to Mass. The Spanish Missalettes have arrived and are available in the clear crates in the back of St. Mary’s of the Pines Church. We ask that you please do not take these Missals home. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry or with the Mass, please contact the parish office or Our Spanish Outreach Coordinator Charles Giles at 698-7159 or 271- 4936
