It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and my brother and I were working in the yard of one of our “clients.” As kids, we thought nothing of working in the blazing sun without a shirt or hat. I was weeding the bed underneath their thorn filled hedges in the front yard. Suddenly, a car pulled into the driveway. As the passengers got out of the car, one of them declared, “Hurry up. Let’s get into the air conditioning,” while bolting for the front door. That statement, and their hurried dash to get inside, seemed ridiculous to me. One of the reasons for my reaction is that my family didn’t have any air conditioning. If it was hot, it was hot. The best we could do, if it was unbearable, was to eat in the basement, because it was cooler. The other means for cooling off came just before going to bed when we would take a quick dip in our above ground pool and then hope to fall asleep before getting hot again! No air conditioning was a part of our life, and I never gave it a second thought. We didn’t have it, and I didn’t miss it. Today, we have air conditioning everywhere. The priests’ residence has central air conditioning, as does the rectory office, the Parish Center, and, of course, the Churches. We can’t live without it – or can we? How spoiled we can be! Certainly, for some, it is a necessity, and it is a good thing that we have it. I’m sure that many of you can remember days, not just without air conditioning, but without any number of modern conveniences that were either not around or beyond one’s budget. When my brother and I cut lawns, we didn’t have a sit-down or self-propelled mower, an edger, a weed whacker, or a blower. We used clippers, rakes, a broom, and our hands! Isn’t it easy to take for granted what we have? The temptation is that the more we have, the more we demand. Some actually believe they are suffering if they lack one of our modern conveniences. In the minds of many young, it is unfair and even unjust to be deprived of almost anything they want, although they would describe it as a “need.” Grandparents and older generations have much to offer the young in the stories they can tell of yesteryear. Tales of how they lived and survived before so many of the conveniences we now enjoy should be more than just an object of curiosity. They carry the invaluable lesson of keeping things in perspective. My point is not that these conveniences are bad, or that we shouldn’t have them. We simply must be careful not to become spoiled and take things for granted. Much of the world doesn’t come close to having the conveniences that fill our lives. I am reminded of this each time we are visited by missionaries. This has been an extremely hot summer. Haven’t we all complained, while at the same time recognizing that soon we will be complaining that it’s too cold? The next time we hear on the news how hot it will be, while listening in our air conditioned houses, cars, offices; perhaps we could utter |
|
a prayer of thanks. “I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me” (Philippians 4: 12, 13).
KNOW YOUR SAINTS
St. Medericus (d. c. 700) August 29
Also known as Merry, he was born at Autun, France, entered St. Martin’s Monastery there when he was thirteen, and in time became abbot. When his holiness attracted much attention he resigned his abbacy and lived as a hermit a few miles from the monastery, but was obliged to return to the monastery when he became ill. In his old age he went on pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Germanus in Paris, resumed his eremitical life near the city, and died there.
ASK A QUESTION
What are the changes in Mass that we keep hearing about?
It is misleading to speak of “changes” in the Mass, because the Mass will not be changed and what we do will not be changing. What is happening is that there will be a third translation of the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal), the ritual text of prayers and instruction for the Catholic celebration of Mass. This edition will be implemented some time next year. What will be different is some of the words that we use. The reason for these changes is the desire to be more faithful to the original Latin and to express more completely and beautifully the theology behind the prayers. Priests of the Diocese attended a two-day workshop on August 11/12 to discuss the new translation and wording. You may visit the Monitor website at www.trentonmonitor.com, or www.USCCB.org/romanmissal; or www.USCCB.org/liturgy; and www.fdlc.org. As the time for implementation approaches, we will have articles in our bulletin regarding these “changes.” In the meantime, if you have any specific questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
Maria Esperanza
We have a group that meets every Thursday morning 10:00am in St. Mary of the Pines to say the Rosary for the Canonization of Maria Esperanza and to pray for a very special intention. All are welcome.
Betania III, the community formed by Maria Esperanza, meets on the last Sunday of each month at 3:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines to attend Mass and to pray the Divine Chaplet and the Rosary. The next Mass will be August 29. All are welcome. For more information, please call Carol Liming at 703-2137.

Know Your Parish – By Cathy Boss
In my last column I wrote of the reliable church rides provided by our Transportation Ministry to those members of our church community who have a challenge getting to and from Sunday Mass. The work of this wonderful ministry reaches beyond weekly Mass. The Transportation Ministry also provides reliable transportation for many other church-related functions. During the Monday of Holy Week, the ministry provides a van and driver for the Chrism Mass in Trenton, a true blessing for those parishioners who like to attend this most poignant and beautiful Mass to begin Holy Week, but find it a challenge to drive the hour-long distance to Trenton in the evening, particularly after working/commuting to work, myself included. Our Nights of Summer Carnival offers an offsite parking shuttle to St. Mary of the Pines to help with parking overflow and safety. The Transportation Ministry has been responsible for this offsite parking shuttle since the shuttle’s onset. Throughout the year St. Mary’s has run many spiritual retreats and programs. The Transportation Ministry has provided airport transportation for these functions visiting priests and speakers. On a fun note, the recent All Faith Blue Claws game in Lakewood had a St. Mary’s parishioner filled van there. Behind the scenes, if you see the church vans, you will notice that they are painted and detailed, identifying the vehicles from St. Mary’s Church as was our first bus, thanks, in part, through the donated effort of one of our parishioners, Pat Testino. The church vans have also been used for Youth Ministry activities over the years. The drivers in our Transportation Ministry find escorting parishioners to and from Mass as well as special events a heart-warming experience and the heart of each rider is just as richly rewarded. If you are in need of a ride to Mass or would like more information about the Transportation Ministry, please contact the rectory. God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessings. - 1 Peter 4:10. A heartfelt thanks to St. Mary’s Transportation Ministry for sharing their driving abilities to help our parish.
