TITHING REPORT
St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $28,831.00 in the regular collection for last weekend. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING. “Go out to all the world and tell the good news.” Rather than thinking of our sacrifice for our parish and community in terms of a dollar amount, tithing challenges us to approach it as a percentage.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
TODAY: TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. Isaiah 66:18-21; Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13; Luke 13:22-30
NEXT SUNDAY: TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24; Luke 14:1, 7-14
READ YOUR BIBLE!!
BIBLE TRIVIA
LAST WEEK: Mary’s journey would have taken about four days to visit Elizabeth.
TODAY’S QUESTION: In the reading from Hebrews, we are told that we have forgotten the exhortation, “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord…” Where in the Scriptures is that exhortation found?

The hour for the vigil is 11:00am-12:00noon. We are aware of several women who have changed their decision to abort babies at this clinic since the vigils began. For this we are grateful to the Lord. All parishioners are invited to join us as we pray for a continued change of heart and the saving of babies at this abortion clinic.

While most of us simply go in and out of our own homes and frequent only those stores and places we want, we can’t help but notice what’s going on around us. We may or may not know very much about our neighbors, but we could wonder what’s transpiring in their lives? We may avoid any number of stores because we don’t care for their products, but do notice what they are selling and who’s going there? I am very content and comfortable in my Catholic world, but there’s a whole lot else happening out there. I could care less about Snookie or Lady Gaga, but there are an awful lot of people who do. There are countless books that I will never read, but there are many, even Catholics, who do. What’s “out there” could fill a library, but I want to highlight two prominent influences in our culture that recently came to my attention. Last week, a new movie was released, “Eat, Pray, Love” based on the book of the same title by Elizabeth Gilbert. I have not read the book and do not know the author. I will not personally judge her or her journey. My concern is for the message that is being conveyed. That message goes along the lines that traditional structures and values are outdated and Western religion is archaic and oppressive. Eastern religion, on the other hand, is “cool” and liberating. One critic of the book called it a “narcissistic New Age reading.” Along the same lines, I also recently encountered another author who has become popular and is supported by Oprah Winfrey. The man is Eckhard Tolle, and his most famous books are, “The Power of Now,” and “A New Earth.” In “The Power of Now” he states that religions “have become so overlaid with extraneous matter that their spiritual substance has become almost completely obscured,” and that they have become “to a large extent…divisive rather than unifying forces.” Actually, as “new” and “refreshing” as these might seem they are nothing more than a recycling of old New Age ideas. The problem is that many Christians and Catholics are taken in by these, failing to see that they are in direct contradiction to our doctrines. The hook is that these ideas superficially can appear to be compatible with Christianity, because everyone seeks the same things – peace, happiness, and fulfillment. To discern the truth, the test has always been the same: “Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can know the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God…” (1 John 4: 1,2). If that isn’t enough: “See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to human tradition, according to the elemental powers of the world and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Unfortunately, we are part of the problem. The way some Catholics live their faith does little to encourage others to walk our path. We can fail, at times miserably, to reflect the Good News of Jesus, virtually chasing people |
|
away from the truth. Some seek the Kingdom of God in “all the wrong places” because we have not convinced them that it is already here. As we continue to be vigilant against false prophets, we should also journey as intensely into our Catholic Faith as others do into the false promises of New Age. If we have become lukewarm in our Catholicism, there is no need to become discouraged for the grace to begin again is always with us. We have so many opportunities here at St. Mary’s to help us being again. May we never take for granted or fail to joyfully proclaim Jesus, who is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE!
KNOW YOUR SAINTS
St. John Kemble (1599-1679) August 22
Born of Catholic parents at St. Weonard’s, Herefordshire, England, he went to Douai to study for the priesthood and was ordained there in 1625. He was sent on the English mission and worked in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire for fifty-three years. He became a victim of the Titus Oates plot hysteria and was arrested in 1678 at Pembridge Castle, his brother’s home, which he had used as his headquarters, and charged with complicity in the Titus Oates plot to assassinate King Charles II. When no evidence was found of his involvement in that notorious fraudulent “plot” when he was examined by the Privy Council in London, he was found guilty of being a Catholic priest. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Hereford on August 22 when he was eighty years old. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as one of the martyrs of England and Wales.
ASK A QUESTION
Do we still believe in Purgatory?
Yes. From the Catechism we read: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned” (CCC, No. 1030, 31). The teaching of the Church does not give us specific details as to the nature of Purgatory. Perhaps the reason some believe the Church no longer teaches this doctrine is that we rarely hear about it. On Sundays, the homily is normally based on the readings, and there are not too many that suggest the doctrine of Purgatory. Also, at funerals, a preacher wants to give comfort and hope to a grieving family, so discussion of Purgatory is usually avoided. These are the reasons that this doctrine is not often mentioned, but Church teaching has not changed. Purgatory still exists.
Maria Esperanza
We have a group that meets every Thursday morning 10:00am in St. Mary of the Pines to say the Rosary for the Canonization of Maria Esperanza and for a very special intention. All are welcome.
Betania III, the community formed by Maria Esperanza, meets on the last Sunday of each month at 3:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines for Mass, topray the Divine Chaplet and the Rosary. The next Mass will be August 29. All are welcome. For more information, please call Carol Liming at 703-2137.

Liturgical Footnote #17: The Liturgy of the Eucharist
By Fr. John C. Garrett
The first action that is part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist is the Offertory. This might seem odd at first. Why would we begin the liturgical re-presentation, that is the participation in the one sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the Cross, with taking up the collection?
In order to understand this, we need to consider the meaning of the collection. On a practical level, the collection is so that the parish can pay its bills. There is a staff, including the priests, who need to be paid. Utilities have to be paid, as well as all the typical expenses of a typical “business” (office supplies, equipment rental, etc.). However, there is a much deeper significance for the collection.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist is also called the Liturgy of the Sacrifice. Of course the main sacrifice that is the core of this liturgy is the Sacrifice of Jesus who offered Himself as the spotless victim for our sins. We participate in Jesus’ bloody sacrifice on the Cross through our participation in the bloodless sacrifice of the Eucharistic Banquet. Jesus makes just the one Sacrifice, but it is presented in the two forms, and it is eternal.
Yet, we are also called to make a sacrifice. Jesus says in the Gospel, “If you would be my disciple you must take up your cross.” We call this sacrifice of ourselves a self-oblation; we give something that God has first given to us, back to Him as a symbol that we are giving Him our entire lives.
In the early days of the Church, the people would bring the bread and wine that would be used at the Mass. As the number of Catholics increased, it became more practical for the local parish to provide the communion bread and wine, but it is still being provided by the parishioners through their donations to the parish. Each week a few people are asked to represent all the congregation and bring up in the offertory procession the gifts of bread and wine. In some parishes, the collection basket, with the financial contributions of the parishioners, is also brought up with the bread and wine, and placed before the altar to symbolize the oblations of the people.
In the early Church, in addition to the bread and wine that would be used at Mass, the people would bring other foodstuffs which the deacons would collect and distribute to the poor. Today it is usually easier for people to give a donation of money, but from that money the parish not only pays its bills and buys the supplies for Mass, but cares for the poor. Here at St. Mary’s we have Ken’s Kitchen where we feed the hungry each week. We also have St. Vincent de Paul, and other groups who minister to people in need. All of that is through the generous self-oblations of our parishioners.
SECOND COMEDY NIGHT
Once again our popular Comedy Night has sold out. However, we will have a second one February 25, 2011. More details will be given later in the Fall.
