TITHING REPORT
Last Sunday, St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $27,581.00 in the regular collection. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING! “Teach me your ways, O Lord.” The spirit of stewardship challenges us to make a difference between what we NEED vs. what we WANT.
TODAY THERE IS A SECOND ENVELOPE FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA
BIBLE TRIVIA
LAST WEEK: Rabbi is a Hebrew word that means “my great one.” It is an honorific title used to address respected teachers of the Law. It occurs 15 times in the New Testament. The other form is “Rabboni” (Mark 10: 51) or “Rabbouni” (John 20: 16), each of which only occurs once in the New Testament.
TODAY’S QUESTION: How many times do you think the word “repent” appears in the Bible?
HOLY FATHER’S INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY
To help us become more aware of our connectedness to the Universal Church, we are printing in the bulletin the monthly prayer intentions of the Holy Father for the good of our Church and the whole world.
General Intention: Victims of Natural Disasters. That the victims of natural disasters may receive the spiritual and material comfort they need to rebuild their lives.
Missionary Intention: Dedication to Peace. That the dedication of Christians to Peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all men and women of good will.
ASK A QUESTION
I can’t get used to the new Gloria? Why did it change so much?
(CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK) The remaining changes for the Gloria are slight. After “Lord Jesus Christ” instead of “only Son of the Father,” the newer version adds, “Only Begotten Son.” After “Lord, God, Lamb of God,” now we add “Son of the Father.” The section that includes “You take away the sins of the world,” has been changed from the singular, “sin,” to the plural, “sins.” The difference indicates that Jesus takes away not just generic sin from the world, but individual sin. He forgives people their personal sins. In the Latin, the word used for sins is in the plural. On the whole, the revised translation for the Gloria reflects the long tradition of this hymn, while making it suitable for singing. It roots us in the Scriptures, gives us words to praise God, and is an occasion to reflect on the forgiving power of Jesus Christ. This reminds us that the purpose is not to simply learn new words, but to PRAY THEM. We seek to use them to enter into the experience of being in the presence of God. (Taken from the pamphlet, “Understanding the Revised Mass Texts,” by Paul Turner, from Liturgy Training Publications.)

Letter From The Pastor
Do you pray every day? We should. Some may have difficulty because they are not sure how to pray or what to do. Prayer can simply be talking to God. The goal is to strengthen our relationship with God. To that end, I want to share something that I received years ago and have used often. It is a reflection on the Lord’s Prayer, which also offers insight into the meaning of prayer. It is called, “If God Dared to Speak while I’m Praying.” I have shortened it for this column but you’ll get the idea. The regular print is us doing the praying and the bold print is God’s response. “Our Father Who art in heaven… YES? Don’t interrupt me. I’m praying. BUT YOU CALLED ME. Called You? I didn’t call You. I’m praying. Our Father Who art in heaven. THERE, YOU DID IT AGAIN. Did what? CALLED ME. YOU SAID, OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN. HERE I AM. WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? Why, I was, I was, you know, just saying my prayers for the day. I always say the Lord’s Prayer. It’s the thing to do. It makes me feel good, kind of like getting a duty done. ALL RIGHT. GO ON. Hallowed be Thy name. HOLD IT. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? By what? BY HALLOWED BE THY NAME. It means, it means, good grief. I don’t know what it means. It’s just part of the prayer. I’m sure it must have a good meaning. By the way, what does it mean? IT MEANS ‘HONORED, HOLY, WONDERFUL.’ Hey that makes sense. But then I seldom think about what the words mean. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. DO YOU REALLY MEAN THAT? Sure, why not? HAVE I GOT CONTROL OF YOU? Well, sure. I go to Mass when I can. THAT’S NOT WHAT I ASKED. HAVE I GOT CONTROL OF ALL OF YOU? WHY DO YOU GO TO MASS, ONLY OUT OF DUTY, OR FOR LOVE OF ME? DO YOU LIVE YOUR FAITH DURING THE WEEK? HOW DO YOU TREAT OTHERS? ARE YOU GENEROUS? Hey, look, I’m just as good as any of those hypocrites who go to church. EXCUSE ME. I THOUGHT YOU WERE PRAYING FOR MY WILL TO BE DONE. DOESN’T THAT BEGIN WITH YOU? I guess You’re right. I can think of some areas that I could work on. SO CAN I. I haven’t given it much thought, but I would like to be better, make improvements, love more. GOOD. NOW WE’RE GETTING SOMEWHERE. Thanks, Lord, but I really have to finish my prayer. This is taking a lot longer than it usually does. Give us this day our daily bread. BY THE WAY, YOU COULD CUT BACK ON SOME OF THAT BREAD. Wait a minute. Why are You picking on me? PRAYING IS A DANGEROUS THING. YOU COULD END UP BEING CHANGED. THAT’S WHAT PRAYER DOES. NOW, KEEP GOING. I WANT TO HEAR THE NEXT PART. I’m scared. OF WHAT? I know what You’re going to say. TRY ME. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. WHAT ABOUT BILL? See, I knew it! I knew You would bring him up. Lord, he really hurt me. He cheated me and told lies about me. I can’t stand
|
|
him. BUT, WHAT ABOUT YOUR PRAYER? Well, I don’t mean it, not in relation to Bill. WELL, AT LEAST YOU’RE HONEST. BUT, HOW CAN I FORGIVE YOU IF YOU DON’T FORGIVE? BESIDES, DOESN’T IT MAKE YOU FEEL WORSE TO CARRY ALL THAT RESENTMENT INSIDE OF YOU? But I don’t know what to do. I can’t help myself. WHY DON’T YOU ASK FOR HELP? I CAN HELP YOU CHANGE. You can? Now that You mention it, I would like to be free of this. I would like to forgive. GREAT. THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS IS POWERFUL. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. GOOD. I CAN DO THAT, BUT DON’T PLACE YOURSELF IN PLACES OF TEMPTATION AND EVIL. What do You mean? IT’S WHAT YOU RESOLVE IN THAT OTHER PRAYER YOU SAY TO ME, TO AVOID THE NEAR OCCASIONS OF SIN. I CAN HELP YOU DO THAT, TOO. I’m sorry, Lord. I really am. Up until now I guess I was just saying the Lord’s Prayer every day without much thought. I guess I forgot that I was really talking to You. I enjoyed this. I want to do it some more. SO DO I.” Remember, keep talking to God. Pray EVERY DAY.
BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL
This weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. When we make a gift to the appeal we follow the command that we are “One Family, Our Family in Christ” with every fiber of our lives.
I am always grateful and moved the by the level of support you give to our parish. I thank you for this support and may God continue to bless you and your family.
The BAA supports many ministries in our Diocese. One ministry will be highlighted each week in the bulletin.
Ministry of Catechesis & Evangelization
Each parish and Catholic school is unique and offers Religious Education in ways that meet the needs of the local community. Some program structures are very traditional; others are innovative. Even as adults we seek to learn more about our faith and deepen our relationship with God. Some adults want to know more, some adults want to grow in their prayer life. Many opportunities for the enrichment of faith are found in events and activities in parishes throughout the diocese, such as Bible Study, parish missions, lecture series, and online learning. The Office of Catechesis helps with adult faith enrichment by providing support for parish leaders and access to resources.

ADORATION CHAPEL
Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place 24 hours a day; seven days a week in the chapel located behind the church in Barnegat. The concept is an old one, rooted in the belief that the Eucharist is the body of Christ and thus a tangible appearance of the divine. There are approximately 250 regular adorers, who spend a designated hour before the Eucharist, some of whom have been keeping up their weekly visits for years. They are backed-up by a list of faithful substitutes. Many people drop in daily to pay a visit and all are welcome.
If you would like to become an Adorer for one of the open hours listed below, or an hour that is more convenient to your schedule, or to put your name on our substitute list, call Joann Kaczala at 609-698-6168.

BINGO
We offer bingo every Sunday and Thursday evening, 7:00pm, in our Parish Center. Over $1,000.00 in prizes are awarded. We are always in need of volunteers. If interested, please call the rectory.
BULLETINS
Hopefully, you TAKE HOME a bulletin each week to become aware of our various parish activities and to read the columns on education and formation. We have asked the ushers not to hand out the bulletins before Mass in order to encourage parishioners to focus on praying and spiritual preparation. It is our goal, as is the practice in many parishes, to have the ushers hand the bulletins to people as they leave Mass. Often, many bulletins are left in the pews, which then need to be gathered before the next Mass. For those who still wish to read the bulletin before Mass, they are available at the usual locations.
CEMETERY MEMORIAL WALK
The cemetery has opened a new Memorial Walk. The cost of bricks begins at $200.00. All proceeds will go toward perpetual care of the buildings and grounds. Order forms are available at the rectory.
CHESS CLUB
Meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, 7:00pm in Monsignor Reinbold Hall. Our next gathering is February 7. We welcome new players of all ages to join us.
DIVORCED/SEPARATED MINISTRY
The Divorced and Separated group meets every Wednesday at 7:00pm in the rectory. Anyone interested in attending please call Wanda Allen at 698-2645 or Deacon Ron at 607-9447.
EMPLOYMENT RESOURCE COMMITTEE
If you know of anyone in the parish or community who is looking for a job, please have them contact St. Mary’s Employment Resource Committee, a ministry which supports and guides job seekers through the challenges of finding new employment. We meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 7:00pm, in St. Mary of the Pines. Please contact Judy Kassar at 489-5087 or judykassar@comcast.net to register for the employment meetings and seminars. To assist our efforts, the ERC is looking for new volunteers with knowledge of the internet and a background in hiring, training, or personnel management skills.
HOSPITALITY SUNDAY
Beginning in February, we will have a “Hospitality Sunday” on the first weekend of the month with coffee and refreshments after the morning Masses. If anyone is interested in assisting in this parish project, please contact the rectory office or any member of the parish council.

To conclude the day, prayers for life will be said at 7:00pm followed by the Rosary and ending with Evening Prayer at 7:30pm in St. Mary’s Church. The next Day of Prayer will be February 13. Please make it a point to stop in on that day and invite others to do the same.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY
Many thanks to our most generous parishioners who helped make the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons brighter for the less fortunate. From monetary donations to food and turkeys and the many gift cards, St. Vincent de Paul was overwhelmed and thankful for your kindness. God Bless you!
The food pantry needs rice, instant potatoes,
jelly, coffee & pancake mix.
SCRIPTURE SHARING
Why not begin the New Year by joining us at our Scripture Sharing Group? There is no weekly commitment to attend but we’d love to have you join us. We read and discuss the Scriptures for the coming Sunday Mass. We find this helps us to better understand how the Scriptures pertain to our lives and how we can apply them in our everyday life. We meet at 10:00am on Tuesday in the rectory. If you have any questions, please call Carole Gordon at 609-698-3664. Hope to see you there!

SPANISH OUTREACH
Our Spanish outreach ministry has begun with a great involvement. A Spanish choir has been formed consisting of 8 singers’, guitar players and two violin players. We have had 3 Spanish masses thus far and the Spanish speaking community has become very involved. Many more Spanish people live within our parish boundaries but few come to Mass. Many attend other denominations. Our hope is that we make them feel welcomed into our parish family. Please tell them about our ministry. The Spanish Mass is being held the third Sunday of every month at 2PM at St. Mary’s of the Pines. Fr. Armando Rodriguez will be our celebrant. We are also in contact with St. Francis Parish, which has a bi-weekly Mass in Spanish. We will be looking at more ways to evangelize in the very near future. Please keep this effort of evangelization in prayer and let us always welcome all who come to Mass. The Spanish Missalettes have arrived and are available in the clear crates in the back of St. Mary’s of the Pines Church. We ask that you please do not take these Missals home. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry or with the Mass, please contact the parish office or Our Spanish Outreach Coordinator Charles Giles at 698-7159 or 271- 4936
