TITHING REPORT
St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $28,188.00 in the regular collection for last weekend and an additional $2,843.00 in the second envelope toward our Diocesan Assessment. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING. “Lord, come to my aid!” It is interesting and challenging to reflect on the meaning of being a steward. A steward is not an owner, but rather a caretaker. Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure invites us to see these as gifts we can manage, but not own.

It was the greatest trip that ever was. You might guess that I am referring to the historic crossing of the Atlantic by Columbus, but I am not. Another possible candidate is the trip of Magellan around South America and across the Pacific, but that, too, would be wrong. Perhaps your patriotism impels you to think of the great Lewis and Clark Expedition, but, again, you would be incorrect. Indeed, the greatest trip in the history of the world was the Tuzeneu family vacation of 1966! In that epic journey, we traveled across the north, west, east and south of our great country. After much planning, our dad took a whole month off from work, and my brother and I managed to suspend our huge lawn-cutting empire for the same length of time. It was a great trip for many reasons, not the least of which it was long before the onset of our mom’s breast cancer, and we were all together. I was thirteen (actually I would become thirteen, eating a soggy birthday cake in Colorado during that expedition) old enough to appreciate the trip, but young enough to be spared serious responsibility. I remember helping with some of the packing, but my biggest “job” was to get my personal stuff together – books and games. What a life! Of course, it didn’t start out so well. The first day we had to return because our Chrysler New Yorker overheated. Pulled behind that classic car was our accommodation, a wonderful pop-up trailer that slept all seven of us, mom and dad on one side, Jimmy and Stevie on the other, and Paul-Leon, Jean Anne and myself in the middle. We endured a great windstorm on the edge of a lake in Minnesota, but mostly enjoyed good weather for the duration. Incredible sights like the Badlands and Mount Rushmore were accented with typical family stuff, like my brother, Steve, asking to have the back window opened so he could blow his bugle out the back as we entered a tunnel only to scare the…well, you get the idea. The long miles between scenic stops were filled with endless verses of, “Where is the boy with the ping pong ball….”and on and on, until our parents threatened death, and contests of guessing the make of cars we past (back when I knew all the makes of cars), and counting the competing number of Esso (that’s right) and Texaco stations. Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite are beautiful beyond words, and, of course, I was oblivious to our parents’ constant preoccupation with our safety. The West Coast destination was very pleasant with visits to our Uncle Johnny and Aunt Dale, and our dad’s boyhood friend, Ed and his wife, Una. We did visit Disneyland (no, not World) but what I remember most is the sting in my eyes from smog as we drove there, and the one night all of us laughed absolutely out of control because Una saw a rubber glove sticking up in the kitchen window. Heading back home from California we took the southern route, driving through the night to avoid the desert heat. Besides my two brothers discovering how unpleasant it is to sit on a cactus, we also remember the night we kids came to our dad’s defense. Driving at night, it seems the car behind us was shining his bright lights right into our rear view mirror. To us kids the only sensible thing to do was to |
|
grab a flashlight and shine it out the back window into the face of the driver behind us. The stops and sights we saw were incredible, but getting there was half the fun. There is no better way to enjoy travel than by camping. Sitting by a campfire at night with no cares in the world is one of the greatest pleasures there can be. Throw in some stories, games and laughter and it’s unbeatable. We returned home in the midst of a typical July heat wave and that first shower felt so good. This is a great country and it was a privilege to see just some it. In the end, though, there truly is no place like home. It sure was nice going to sleep in our own beds especially with memories of a trip that truly was the greatest there ever was. Of course, I may be a bit prejudiced. I’m sure you have your trips to rival that epic journey of 1966. I truly hope you do. Have a great rest of the summer!
KNOW YOUR SAINTS
St. Tarsicius (3rd century) August 15
An acolyte or perhaps a deacon at Rome, he was accosted and beaten to death on the Appian Way by a mob while carrying the Eucharist to some Christians in prison. The incident is included in Cardinal Wiseman’s novel Fabiola, and Pope Damasus wrote a poem about it. Tarsicius is the patron of first communicants.
ASK A QUESTION
With the new procedure for dismissing the Extraordinary Ministers of Communion at the end of Mass, what do I do if the person is not available at that time?
The principle that applies is the rule that one should never take the Blessed Sacrament from church and make stops along the way to their homebound or sick person. One should not go to the store, etc, but only go directly to the person. In the case that the time of the Mass one attends is not convenient for that person, one does not have to receive Communion in their pyx during Mass. In such a case, they can simply go to Church at a later time and take the Host from the Ciborium in the Tabernacle, and then proceed directly to the sick person.
Maria Esperanza
We have a group that meets every Thursday morning 10:00am in St. Mary of the Pines to say the Rosary for the Canonization of Maria Esperanza and for a very special intention. All are welcome.
Betania III, the community formed by Maria Esperanza, meets on the last Sunday of each month topray the Divine Chaplet, Rosary, and Mass at 3:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines. The next Mass will be August 29. All are welcome. For more information, please call Carol Liming at 703-2137.
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
This year the Assumption falls on a Sunday. Therefore the obligation to attend Mass for the Holy Day is satisfied by going to Mass for this Sunday. It is not necessary to attend an additional Mass.

Liturgical Footnote #17: The Liturgy of the Eucharist
By Fr. John C. Garrett
The Prayer of the Faithful brings to conclusion the Liturgy of the Word. As was noted in a previous column, Thomas a Kempis wrote that during the Mass we feast at two tables; the Table of the Word, and the Table of the Sacrifice. These two tables are “so closely connected that they form but one single act of worship” (Second Vatican Council, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #56). Despite this close connection between the Table of the Word and the Table of the Sacrifice, there is a noticeable change in the focus of the Mass as we move from the one to the other.
“During the Liturgy of the Word, the readers and preacher are addressing the people. Information is being transmitted from an authoritative source (the Word) to the listeners (the people)” (Randolph, Know Him in the Breaking of Bread, p. 95). During this part of the Mass, the congregation is essentially passive and receptive. This changes as we move into the Liturgy of the Eucharist. “Now the priest and people together are joining in an action of worship” (Randolph, p. 96). Now the priest is no longer the learned authority, but now functions as the ambassador between God and His people. Like a diplomat, the priest is suppose to speak only on behalf of those he represents. The priest’s personality should no longer be noticeable; as Jesus only said and did what His Father told Him to say and do, likewise the priest should only say and do what the Church says to do in the liturgy.
During the Liturgy of the Word, the priest largely speaks to the people; now, during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest is speaking to God on behalf of the people. Interestingly, this is why the priest traditionally would stand before the congregation and facing with them present the sacrifice on their behalf. This is not really the forum to discuss the proper orientation of the priest during the Mass (facing the people or “ad orientum”/facing with the people). There is some truth in the argument that while in the past it was inappropriate for the priest to do the readings at Mass with his back toward the people, there is a similar inappropriateness for the priest to be facing the people as he, in the person of Christ, offers the sacrifice on behalf of the people. However, the physical orientation of the priest is less important than the spiritual orientation of both the priest and the people -- all should be oriented toward God, offering sacrifice to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Pope Benedict has encouraged parishes throughout the world to place a Crucifix on the Altar so that both the priest and people can have a point of focus as they orientate their hearts to Christ as they together celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Eucharist. You may have noticed that we now have a Crucifix on the Altars of both of our churches. |

Know Your Parish – By Cathy Boss
Most of us take for granted opportunities we have regarding living arrangements, employment situations, means of transportation, social and recreational activities and other aspects of everyday life, particularly attending church. We drive ourselves or are driven to a Saturday night or Sunday Liturgy in order to come to know God, to honor Him through worship and by our very presence in His house. St. Mary’s began a very wonderful ministry 15 years ago through the amazing organizational efforts of George Kaul to help those parishioners who did not have a means of transportation to attend Mass or who were unable to drive due to illness, vision problems or physical infirmities. St. Mary’s Transportation Ministry started with one bus. George recruited three additional drivers - parishioners with commercial drivers licenses (as required by law to drive a bus)– Jack Phillips, Jim Sheridan and Larry Cataldo to start up the Transportation Ministry. The 4 drivers took turns picking up parishioners for Mass each Sunday. In the beginning, due to the large geographic area of our parish, the route with one bus, depending on the number of riders, could take up to 90 minutes to complete. I could not imagine the difficulties encountered in trying to coordinate such an effort in our large parish. Over the years, the Transportation Ministry has grown in size and in vehicles. Buses have been replaced by vans, which do not require a CDL for operation. The ministry now has 9 drivers and 2 routes – one for the 8:00 Sunday Mass at the church in Barnegat and one for the 9:00 Mass at the Pines in Manahawkin. Parishioners call the rectory for a ride and are placed on a route according to where they live. Two very dedicated and hard-working women – Grace and Jo call each parishioner on a weekly basis to confirm a ride is needed. The Transportation Ministry does not offer transportation when there is snow in concern for the safety of the drivers and the safety of the parishioners trying to get on and off the bus. The Transportation Ministry’s role has also expanded beyond transportation to Mass – to be continued. God Bless.
