TITHING REPORT

Last Sunday, St. Mary’s parishioners tithed $29,754.00 in the regular collection and an additional $2,855.00 in the second envelope toward our Diocesan assessment. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF TITHING!  “Here am I, Lord; I come to do Your will.” What percentage of our income do we return to the Lord? NEXT SUNDAY THERE IS A SECOND ENVELOPE FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA.

BIBLE TRIVIA

LAST WEEK:  It was Herod the Great who was present at the time of Jesus’ birth.  His three sons, whom he allowed to live, were Archelaus, Philip, and Herod Antipas, who was the Herod of Jesus’ trial.

TODAY’S QUESTION:  What does the word “Rabbi” mean?  How many times does it appear in the New Testament?  What is the other form of the word which is only used twice in the Gospel referring to Jesus?

Maria Esperanza

We have a group that meets every Thursday morning 10:00am in St. Mary of the Pines to say the Rosary for the canonization of Maria Esperanza and to pray for a very special intention.  All are welcome. (If there is a Funeral Mass scheduled, rosary will be prayed in the side meeting room.)

Betania III, the community founded by Maria Esperanza, meets on the last Sunday of each month at 3:00pm in St. Mary of the Pines to attend Mass and to pray the Divine Chaplet and the Rosary. The next Mass will be Sunday January 29. All are welcome. For more information, please call Carole Liming at 703-2137.

HOLY FATHER’S INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY

To help us become more aware of our connectedness to the Universal Church, we are printing in the bulletin the monthly prayer intentions of the Holy Father for the good of our Church and the whole world.

General Intention: Victims of Natural Disasters. That the victims of natural disasters may receive the spiritual and material comfort they need to rebuild their lives.

Missionary Intention: Dedication to Peace. That the dedication of Christians to Peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all men and women of good will.

ASK A QUESTION

I can’t get used to the new Gloria?  Why did it change so much?

(CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK)  “We praise You,/ we bless You, / we adore You, / we glorify You, / we give you thanks for your great glory, / Lord God, heavenly King, / O God, almighty Father.”  This replaces a shorter text in the previous version.  The one we had used probably was abbreviated because it sounds a bit excessive.  All the descriptions of God have been restored, and the result does sound excessive – but that is the point.  We feel so overcome with awe in the presence of God that we practically babble and stammer.  We keep searching for words to describe the experience, and the result – word upon word – seems the best way to demonstrate the overwhelming experience of meeting God in prayer. This reminds us that the purpose is not to simply use new words, but to PRAY THEM.   We seek to use them to enter into the experience of being in the presence of God.   (Taken from the pamphlet, “Understanding the Revised Mass Texts,” by Paul Turner, from Liturgy Training Publications)

Letter From The Pastor
 by Fr. JC Garrett

Msgr. Ken suggested that I share the story I used in my homily on New Year’s with the rest of the parish, in this column.  It is the story of Claude Newman.

Claude was an African-American man, born in Arkansas in 1923.  Claude was born into a poor family, and at age 5 he moved to Mississippi to live with his grandmother.

When Claude was 16 years-old, his beloved grandmother married a man, Sid, who was very abusive toward  her.  Three years later, provoked by Sid’s abuse of his grandmother, Claude shot and killed Sid.  A couple of weeks later, Claude was captured by law enforcement and convicted of murder and was sentenced to be executed in the electric chair in 1944.

While awaiting execution, Claude shared a cell-block with four other prisoners.  One night, as the five men were sitting around talking, Claude noticed a medal that one of the other prisoners was wearing around his neck.  Claude asked the prisoner what the medal was.  The other prisoner was embarrassed because he did not know, so he angrily threw it at Claude’s feet with a curse, telling him to take it.  Although he has no idea who’s image was on it, Claude was attracted to it, so he put it around his neck.  It was a Miraculous Medal.

That night, while sleeping on the top bunk, Claude was awaken by a touch.  As Claude would say later, there stood “the most beautiful Woman that God ever Created.”  Claude was at first frightened.  The Lady calmed Claude down, saying to him, “If you would like Me to be your Mother, and you would like to be My child, send for a priest of the Catholic Church.”  She then disappeared.

Immediately Claude started screaming that he wanted to see a Catholic priest.  Fr. Robert O’Leary was called the first thing the next morning.  Claude told Fr. O’Leary about what he experienced the night before, and asked Fr. O’Leary for instruction in the Catholic faith.  Fr. O’Leary agreed, but faced a challenge when he learned that Claude did not know how to read or write.  Undeterred, Claude begins his studies.

As Fr. O’Leary began the lesson on the Sacrament of Confession, Claude said, “Oh, I know about that!  The Lady told me that when we go to confession we are kneeling down not before a priest, but we’re kneeling down by the Cross of Her Son.  And that when we are truly sorry for our sins, and we confess our sins, the Blood He shed flows down over us and washes us free from all sins.”  Fr. O’Leary sat stunned with his mouth open.  At first Claude thought he was angry with him for blurting it out.  Fr. O’Leary assured Claude that he is not angry, but surprised, and asks Claude if he had seen the Lady again.  Claude says to the priest, “She told me that if you doubted me or showed hesitancy, I was to remind you that lying in a ditch in Holland in 1940, you made a vow to Her which She’s still waiting for you to keep.”  Claude then told Fr. O’Leary that the vow was to build a church in honor of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception, and Fr. O’Leary confirmed that that was exactly what he had vowed.  Fr. O’Leary would fulfill his vow in 1947.

At a later lesson, on Holy Communion, Claude related, “The Lady told me that in Communion, I will only see what looks like a piece of bread.  But She told me that It is really and truly Her Son, and that He will be with me just as He was with Her before He was born in Bethlehem.  She told me that I should spend my time like She did during Her lifetime with Him-- in loving Him, adoring Him, thanking Him, praising Him and asking Him for blessings. I shouldn't be distracted or bothered by anybody else or anything else, but I should spend those few minutes in my thoughts alone with Him.”

Shortly before Claude was to be executed, he was received into the Catholic Church.  Fr. O’Leary gave Claude Holy Communion shortly before his schedule execution.  Fifteen minutes before he was to be executed, the sheriff told Claude that the Governor had given him a 2 week stay of execution.  Claude began to cry.  The priest and sheriff assumed that it was for joy, but Claude said, “But you don't understand! If you ever saw Her face, and looked into Her eyes, you wouldn't want to live another day!”  Claude then continued, “What have I done wrong these past weeks that God would refuse me my going home?”
Fr. O’Leary then had a sudden inspiration. He reminded Claude about James Hughs, a white prisoner in the same jail who hated Claude intensely.  Like Claude, he too was sentenced to be executed for murder. James was raised a Catholic but now rejected God and all things Christian. Fr. O’Leary said to Claude, “Maybe Our Blessed Mother wants you to offer this denial of being with Her for his conversion. Why don't you offer to God every moment that you are separated from your heavenly Mother for this prisoner, so that he will not be separated from God for all eternity.”  Claude thought for a moment, then agreed.  During his two weeks reprieve, Claude generously offered his sacrifice and prayers for James Hughs.  Two weeks later, on February 4, 1944, Claude was executed in the electric chair.  His final words to Fr. O’Leary were, “Father, I will remember you.  And whenever you have a request, ask me, and I will ask Her.”
Three months later, James Hughs, who Claude had offered his sacrifice for, was to be executed.  He would not allow a priest or any clergyman in his cell. Just before his execution, the county doctor pleaded with him to at least kneel down and say the "Our Father" before the sheriff would come for him. The prisoner spat in the doctor's face.
When he was strapped into the electric chair, the sheriff said to him, "If you have something to say, say it now."  The condemned man started to blaspheme.  All of a sudden he stopped speaking, and his eyes became fixed on the corner of the room, and his face turned into one of absolute horror. Suddenly he screamed in terror.  Turning to the sheriff, he then said, "Sheriff, get me a priest!"
Fr. O'Leary immediately went to the condemned man. The room was cleared of everyone else, and the priest heard the man's confession. James confessed all of his sins with deep repentance and intense fervor.
While everyone was returning to the room, the sheriff asked the priest why James had changed his mind.  Fr. O’Leary said that he never asked James.  The sheriff said that he would not be able to sleep that night without asking, which he did.  James responded, "Remember that black man Claude – the one whom I hated so much? Well he's standing there [and he pointed], over in that corner. And behind him with one hand on each shoulder is the Blessed Virgin Mary. And Claude said to me, 'I offered my death in union with Christ on the Cross for your salvation. She has obtained for you this gift of seeing your place in Hell if you do not repent.'  I had been shown my place in Hell, and that's why I screamed."
James Hughs was executed as scheduled, but the heavenly appearance of our Blessed Mother with Claude Newman and the subsequent vision of hell had instantly converted his soul in the last moments of his life. With the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Father O'Leary had taught Claude to unite himself with the suffering of Jesus by offering his own sufferings to Him, just as all of us can do for others.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is the continuous adoration of Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist.  According to the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, some writers trace the beginnings of perpetual adoration to the late fourth century, in the days of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, when converts to their faith in some dioceses were to adore the Blessed Sacrament exposed for 8 days after their baptism.  Prior to the institution of the feast of Corpus Christi, not only religious in convents and monasteries, but the laity practiced Eucharistic adoration.  After his victory over the Albigeneses, King Louis VII of France asked the Bishop of Avignon to have the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the Chapel of the Holy Cross on September 14, 1226.  The number of adorers was so great that the bishop decided to have the adoration continue day and night.  This was later ratified by the Holy See and continued uninterrupted until 1792 during the French Revolution.  It was resumed again in 1828, but did not develop on a worldwide scale until after the Council of Trent.  Here at St. Mary’s, one of our parishioners, Betty Esposito, had a dream, much like Martin Luther King, Jr.  Betty envisioned a place where the heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament would be praised, adored, and loved 24 hours a day.  After years of planning and praying, Betty saw her dream for a perpetual adoration chapel enfold with groundbreaking on November 2, 1997, months of construction by some very talented parishioners, and dedication on June 20, 1998 by Bishop Reiss.  The chapel is open 24 hours a day for anyone to come and visit the Lord.  There are also candles for lighting in the foyer of the chapel.  Inside the chapel itself, there are pews for praying, sitting and visiting with the Lord, with books, bibles, and rosaries for your use.  The Eucharist is displayed in a special holder called a monstrance. There is also a book just inside the main chapel area where you can write a special intention.  To keep the chapel open, there must be an assigned adorer for each hour.  There is always a need for substitutes and for adorers the hours listed in the bulletin.  Why not make a resolution to spend a personal hour with Him each week in the chapel by calling Joann Kaczala at 609-698-6169.  Have a very happy and healthy New Years.  God bless.

SCRIPTURE SHARING

Why not begin the New Year by joining us at our Scripture Sharing Group?  There is no weekly commitment to attend but we’d love to have you join us.  We read and discuss the Scriptures for the coming Sunday Mass.  We find this helps us to better understand how the Scriptures pertain to our lives and how we can apply them in our everyday life.  We meet at 10:00am on Tuesday in the rectory.  If you have any questions, please call Carole Gordon at 609-698-3664.  Hope to see you there!

SPANISH OUTREACH

We have begun an outreach to those of our community who are Spanish-speaking or of Spanish ancestry.  Many Spanish people live within our parish boundaries, but few come to Mass. Some attend other denominations.  We hope to make them feel welcomed and at home in our parish.  As part of this effort, we plan to have a Mass in Spanish in St. Mary of the Pines at 2:00pm the third Sunday of every month. Fr. Armando Rodriguez will be our celebrant. As we are one parish with two Churches, we hope that in the future all will desire to pray together at our regular scheduled Mass times. We are also in contact with St. Francis Parish, which has a bi-weekly Mass in Spanish. Missalettes in Spanish have been ordered. If you are interested in assisting, please contact the parish office.  Let us keep this effort of evangelization in prayer. Let us always welcome all who come to Mass. If you are interested in assisting with the Mass or with the Spanish outreach, please call Charles Giles at 698-7159.

Please note:  New Spanish Missals are in clear crates in the vestibule of St. Mary of the Pines.
